Guwahati : Protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill continues in Assam as people across the State staged various rallies on Thursday. Ruling BJP’s former ally AGP has been staging hunger-strike in protest against the Bill
on the bank of Dighalipukhuri in the city. Many noted personalities of the State including Dr Hiren Gohain, advocate Nekibur Zaman, journalist-writer Maini Mahanta, activist Akhil Gogoi also took part in the strike. Meanwhile, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) staged dharna at Ganesh Park in Ganeshguri near Secretariat in protest against Centre’s move to pass the Bill in the Rajya Sabha in the coming session of parliament. APCC president Ripun Bora, senior party leader Akon Bora and several other leaders also participated in the protest. The APCC president, while speaking Pratidin Time has informed that the party workers have been also staging dharna in front of every DC as well as SDO office across the State. On the other hand, in Bokakhat, Bengali Samaj staged protest rally by shouting slogans against the Bill and the BJP government in the State and Centre.
The protesters also displayed placards against the Bill. They asked the government to stop its communal politics. Similar protests were also seen at Khumtai, Sonari, Digboi and other places, where people took to the streets and burnt effigies of PM Narendra Modi and Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal and voiced against the much debated Bill. Meanwhile Former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi slammed Finance Minister of Assam Himata Biswa Sarma on Thursday and referred him as ‘Hitler of Assam’. Gogoi said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government has pushed Assam to an unfortunate turmoil. Talking about Himant’s statement on BJP to change Assam’s fate in 20 years,Gogoi urged BJP to focus more on their performance and run the government smoothly.
The former Chief Minister also said the BJP government has become paralyzed and hence the students of the state are made to take the streets and protest. Addressing a press conference in Delhi on Gogoi said the BJP government has turned fascist and have started crushing democracy. Recalling the old days Gogoi said ‘ Even I was waved black flags during my tenure” Gogoi also alleged that the BJP government do not care about the interest of the indigenous people and the government through the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 has created conflict between the Bengali and Assamese community. There has been a constant competition between Himanta Biswa Sarma and Sarbananda Sonowal of who can be more loyal to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) said Gogoi. Gogoi added, no Chief Minister in the History of Assam stood against the interest of the indigenous people except Sarbananda Sonowal. Lambasting Narendra Modi, Gogoi said, “Modi is frightened with handing over responsibility to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as general secretary for Uttar Pradesh East ahead of the forthcoming Lok Sabha election..”
