Guwahati : In a shocking protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, more than 30,000 people hit the streets of different towns in Mizoram and staged demonstration against the Central government. Photos and videos of the protest went viral on social media. The protestors were seen shouting slogans and holding banners, which read, “Hello China, Bye Bye India”.Alleging that the controversial bill will endanger the very existence of the Mizos, the protesters burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. “There is a strong feeling among us Mizos that the India does not listen to us, does not care for us, and favours illegal migrants over us,” said a member of North East Students Organisation (NESO). Along with NESO, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) and Young Mizo Association (YMA) have organised the protest rally and threatened to boycott Republic Day. The members of the organisations expressed that the biggest threat the Bill poses for Mizoram is the influx of ‘illegal Chakmas’. It should be noted that large sections of Mizos do not consider Chakmas a part of Mizoram and blame the community for illegal migration from Bangladesh. The report quoted Ricky Lalbiakmawia, the finance secretary of NESO, as saying: “There is a strong feeling among us Mizos that the India does not listen to us, does not care for us, and favours illegal migrants over us,” adding, ““So, we are starting to think if it is instead better to seek assistance from China, and have better relations with them.”
