Railway service across the historic Pampan bridge, connecting Pampan Island with Rameswaram on mainland Tamil Nadu has been suspended till further notice.

The Madurai railway division has informed that rail traffic on the two kilometre long bridge has been suspended for conducting maintenance work.

The bridge, with a unique bascule section that can be drawn up to allow passage of ships, has been in service since 1915. Following damage to the bascule section, service on the bridge had been stopped for a period in 2018 – 19.

In the meantime, work on a new bridge at Pampan had been inaugurated by Prime Mi sister Shri Narendra Modi in 2018.

The Pampan bridge is a major tourist attraction in the area because a whole train is accommodated on the bridge in the middle of sea at one point of time during the crossing.
