Mumbai: The Sensex and the Nifty today surged more than one percent in the afternoon trade. Both stock indices logged gains amid positive global share markets. The Sensex was trading above 54,300 mark while the Nifty was trading above the 16,200 level.
The Sensex rose 560 points, or 1.04 percent, to trade at 54,320. The Nifty also added 172 points, or 0.07 percent, to trade at 16,221 when reports last came in.
In the forex market, the rupee weakened marginally by three paise to trade at 79 rupees and 90 paise against the US dollar in the afternoon deals.
