Skill India celebrates the launch of the New Parliament Building; built by its own people, very own Karigars
Skill India celebrates the remarkable achievement of training 910 skilled carpenters who played a crucial role in the construction of the new state of the art parliament building, inaugurated by our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi in New Delhi on May 28th, 2023. The successful construction of the parliament building is a testament to the success of India’s people. These skilled individuals, whose expertise has been recognized and enhanced by the Skill India Mission, have undergone transformative training through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme, under the flagship Scheme of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).
The Furniture and Fitting Skill Council (FFSC) of MSDE, in collaboration with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) jurisdiction and the NARSI Group, conducted a comprehensive training for the carpenter community, fostering a skilled workforce capable of undertaking modern and futuristic infrastructure projects. Under the initiative, RPL training has not only honed the skills of the carpenters but also uplifted their livelihood, enabling them to contribute towards nation-building. This story of success of the creation of the world-class infrastructure for the new parliament exemplifies the remarkable impact of RPL training, and it serves as an inspiration for the future endeavours.
Dr. Krishna Kumar Dwivedi, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) expressed his admiration for the new parliament’s infrastructure and on the successful implementation of the RPL programme. He said, the success of the New Parliament stands as a shining example of India’s people and their exceptional skills. Through Skill India’s RPL training, we have recognized the existing capabilities of our workforce and further strengthened their potential. This achievement is not only about creating an avant-garde design for our new parliament but has also enabled many individuals who can proudly say that they have become a part of the nation’s progress and its new identity.
The new Parliament is a four-storeyed building spread over 9.5 acres and the entire project was completed within a span of 29 months despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a skill certification component to enable Indian youth to take on industry relevant skill certification which will help them to secure a better livelihood. Individuals with prior learning experience or skills can register themselves and get assessed and certified under the RPL component of PMKVY. It focuses mainly on individuals engaged in unregulated sectors.
To boost the formal skill training of the candidates, FFSC has undertaken several programmes such as Meri Skill Meri Pehchan, the National Apprenticeship Promotional Scheme (NAPS), and created a Centre of Excellence to actively involve the candidates in India’s economic growth. The objective is to enhance employability and create opportunities for carpenters in various trades, including construction, electrical work, plumbing, pottery, and more.
