In Sri Lanka, all government schools have re-opened today for all grades nearly five months after they were closed due to COVID outbreak in the country. Earlier, the schools were opened for senior grades last month for couple of weeks before they got closed because of a fresh cluster developing in a rehabilitation center and general elections held last week. The schools are allowed to re-open from today in several phases to prevent overcrowding within confined spaces.

Accordingly, certain days of the week have been reserved for particular grades and students to attend school. The Ministry of education said the secondary schools will be open on Thursdays and Fridays only for grades 9 through grade 13. The COVID situation in the country is under control with only sporadic cases of arrivals from foreign countries testing positive.

There are only 254 active patients with number of infections at 2844 so far. Eleven people have died of the pandemic in the country. The ruling party under Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had made successful COVID control as one of the main issues during election campaign.
