In Assam, stage has been set for the first phase of Panchayat polls to be held on Wednesday.
16 districts of the state will go for polls in the first phase to elect anchalik panchayat members, zila Parishad members, gram panchayat members and presidents. A total of 43,515 candidates are in the fray in the first phase. The run-up to the first phase polling had witnessed high-pitch campaigning from all political parties.
The ruling BJP and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) are contesting the Panchayat polls independently. The second phase of polling will be held on 9th of this month. Counting will be held on 12th of December.
