Hyderabad: In the recently concluded Telangana urban local body elections held on February 11, 2026, the ruling Congress delivered a resounding victory, securing over 1,500 wards across 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations. The party clinched outright majorities in around 70-80 municipalities and at least four to five corporations, cementing Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s grip on power just two years after the party’s historic 2023 assembly win. In contrast, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), despite aggressive campaigning and lofty claims of a major breakthrough, managed to win just one municipal corporation—Karimnagar—while finishing a distant third overall with around 326 wards. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) came second but fared poorly compared to its past dominance.

The BJP’s miserable performance, including weak showings in municipalities and prior gram panchayat polls in December 2025, exposes the gap between its national ambitions and ground reality in Telangana. Several factors contributed to this defeat. First, voters in local body elections often prioritize the ruling party for practical reasons: smoother administration, faster project clearances, and access to government schemes. Congress, as the incumbent state government, benefited immensely from this trend. Revanth Reddy’s effective delivery on six key guarantees—free electricity, health coverage, and women-centric schemes—built goodwill, translating into votes even in urban areas where the party historically lagged.

Second, the BJP overestimated its appeal. High-profile leaders like Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar hyped a “saffron surge,” banking on Hindutva narratives and anti-BRS sentiment. However, local issues like development, water supply, and sanitation dominated over national polarization. In the gram panchayats, where elections are more grassroot-oriented, BJP-backed candidates struggled amid Congress’s strong organizational push and welfare outreach. The party’s limited cadre base outside northern Telangana districts like Karimnagar—its sole corporation win—proved a major handicap. Internal factionalism and failure to field strong local candidates further hurt its prospects.

Meanwhile, Congress’s victory is seen as a massive endorsement of Revanth Reddy’s leadership. The party achieved a 14-fold jump in urban wins compared to previous cycles, reclaiming ground lost during the BRS era. By focusing on inclusive governance and rapid implementation of promises, Congress appealed across castes and communities, sidelining BRS’s residual rural influence. BRS, reeling from its 2023 assembly debacle and KCR’s diminished stature, could not mount a credible challenge, splitting anti-Congress votes in some areas but ultimately finishing behind.

These results signal trouble for BJP ahead of future contests, including the all-important Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation polls. Overreliance on central schemes and communal rhetoric failed to resonate in a state prioritizing state-level welfare. For Congress, it’s a clear mandate to continue its momentum, potentially eyeing a decade in power. The polls underscore a simple truth: in local bodies, delivery trumps hype.
