Kochi: Aster MIMS, Calicut, announced the launch of North Kerala’s first CVI Clinic in private sector dedicated to addressing Cortical Visual Impairments (CVI) in children. The inauguration was graced by distinguished personalities, including Cerebral Palsy Sports Association Kerala President K. N Gopalakrishnan and Kerala Cerebral Palsy Football Team Captain Sijo George.

Unlike typical visual impairments, CVI is caused by damage to the brain, affecting the brain’s visual centers and pathways responsible for visual perception. Recognizing the crucial role vision plays in the behaviour of children with movement disorders such as cerebral palsy, Aster MIMS has established this specialized clinic equipped with advanced treatment facilities for early detection and intervention.

The CVI Clinic at Aster MIMS is committed to providing comprehensive care for children affected by CVI. Through a range of therapies and services, a specially trained occupational therapist from Madurai Aravind Eye Hospital, a leading eye hospital chain in the country, will deliver individualized treatment plans to address the unique needs of each child.

CVI is more prevalent in newborns and children, with increased risk among those born prematurely or who have experienced health complications during birth, such as oxygen deprivation, low glucose levels in the blood, or diseases like meningitis. Early detection through various eye tests enables prompt intervention, improving the outcomes for these children.

During the launch event, renowned motivator and entrepreneur Shyja Shanoj graced the occasion as a special guest. Dr. Sujith V. Nayanar, Director-Ophthalmology, Aster MIMS Cluster , Dr. Sunita Mathew, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, and Dr. A.J Nirmal, Consultant in the Pediatric Ophthalmology Department, Senior Consultants Dr. M. V Shermila and Dr. Faraz Ali Muhammad attended the event.

Aster MIMS is proud to take a significant step towards enhancing the lives of children affected by Cortical Visual Impairments. The launch of North Kerala’s first CVI Clinic demonstrates the organization’s commitment to providing comprehensive and specialized healthcare services for children in the region.
