WALKATHON ORGANISED TO COMMEMORATE 100 YEARS OF ELECTRIC TRACTION IN INDIA

Thiruvananthapuram:  A Walkathon was organised on Thursday to mark the Centenary of Electric Traction in India, a significant milestone in the nation’s railway journey. Electric traction, which began on 3rd February 1925 with the first service between Bombay VT and Kurla, has since played a vital role in enhancing operational efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting sustainable mobility across the country.

Dr. Manish Thaplyal, Divisional Railway Manager, Thiruvananthapuram, flagged off the Walkathon from the Divisional Railway Manager’s Office, Thycaud, at 9:30 AM. In his address, he stated that the Walkathon aimed to raise public awareness about the environmental and economic benefits of electric traction and Indian Railways’ commitment to sustainable transportation. The march proceeded towards Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station, with the active participation of senior officers, staff, and railway enthusiasts.

The event highlighted Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to increase renewable energy dependence and its ambition to achieve Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2030. The transition to electric traction has made railway operations more energy-efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly.

As part of the centenary celebrations, the Electrical Branch of Thiruvananthapuram Division conducted seminars and quiz competitions on electric traction, attended by engineering students, fostering greater interest and awareness of sustainable railway technologies.

The Walkathon, led by Ms. Viji MR, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, concluded at Thiruvananthapuram Central Station, with participants reaffirming their commitment to promoting sustainable practices. Shri Saji Abraham, Senior Divisional Engineer (Traction Distribution), outlined the various programs held during the centenary celebrations, underscoring the division’s dedication to supporting Indian Railways’ vision of a greener and more efficient railway network.
