Mumbai: In a landmark achievement in advanced renal care, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road successfully performed a highly complex ABO-incompatible kidney transplant on a young boy facing life-threatening medical challenges. The young boy (age 28) was diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease along with Chronic Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Following a prior splenectomy, his platelet count had dropped to a critically low 25,000 — significantly increasing the risk of severe bleeding during surgery and making the transplant exceptionally high-risk.
In a deeply emotional and courageous decision, his mother chose to donate her kidney despite blood group incompatibility. Her selfless act became the foundation of this life-saving journey, reflecting the extraordinary strength of a mother’s love. To ensure a successful outcome, the medical team implemented an intensive desensitization protocol that included multiple sessions of plasmapheresis and advanced immunotherapy to reduce antibody levels and stabilize platelet counts before surgery. The case demanded meticulous surgical precision, vigilant intraoperative management, and comprehensive postoperative care to protect the transplanted organ and prevent complications.
Dr. Puneet Bhuwania, Consultant Nephrologist, led the transplant planning and immunological management. He said, “This was one of the most challenging transplant cases due to multiple medical complexities. With careful planning, strict monitoring, and seamless teamwork, we were able to achieve a successful outcome. The courage of the mother and the strength of the child truly inspired our entire team.” The transplant surgery was performed by Dr. Jayesh Dhabalia, Consultant Urologist, Andrologist, and Transplant Surgeon; Dr. Pradeep Prabhakar Vyavahare, Consultant Urologist, Uro-Oncologist, Andrologist & Kidney Transplant Surgeon; Dr. Prakash Tejwani, Consultant Urologist & Andrologist; and Dr. Ashutosh Baghel, Consultant Urologist, Andrologist, and Renal Transplant Surgeon, who collectively ensured precision during surgery and comprehensive postoperative care.
The transplant was successfully completed, offering the young patient a renewed lease on life and hope for a healthier future.
