Yami Gautam Dhar Talks About The Roles That Define Her, the Moments That Tested Her, and the Life She Has Built in Femina’s June-July Issue
Few actors in Hindi cinema today have carved a path quite as deliberate, bold, and unapologetically their own as Yami Gautam Dhar has. Now on the cover of Femina’s June-July 2026 issue, she arrives at a moment that feels like the culmination of everything she has been building towards. From a soft-spoken banker in Vicky Donor and a razor-sharp intelligence operative in Article 370 to a protagonist fighting a legal battle in Haq and a psychologically-complex teacher in A Thursday, each role has been a declaration that she will never be what anyone expects her to be.
Talking about what draws her to a role, Yami shares, “When I’m choosing a role, I look for originality in the script and see how different that story is; it has to excite me as an artist and an audience both. The whole idea is to keep reinventing yourself and breaking the pattern.”
Reflecting on Article 370 and Haq, two films that she feels best capture the fullness of her journey, Yami says, “I feel these two films sum up what I have been working towards in the industry. I had that wholesome feeling of having the opportunity to be able to do what I want to express myself as an artist. Both films are such an integral part of my journey and I’m extremely proud to be associated with them.”
On finding balance between motherhood and shooting after the birth of her son Vedavid, she avers, “There is no perfect way to balance time between home and set; you’re literally juggling priorities, taking it one day at a time. Every day is a new day, and Aditya [her husband, director Aditya Dhar] and I plan accordingly.”
On staying true to herself in an industry that is quick to categorise, Yami says, “One of the most important things in the industry is to be able to be the person that you are, to be able to protect your personality, and uphold your self-respect.”
