GUWAHATI: Congress high command will issue a notice to Congress MLA from Thowra constituency Sushanta Borgohain to show cause on his reported joining in the BJP, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) working president Rana Goswami said here on Thursday.
There are reports that Borgohain is likely to join the saffron party at the state BJP headquarters here on August 2.
“His joining is almost confirmed. His joining will further strengthen the BJP in upper Assam,” a senior leader of the saffron party said.
Borgohain will come to Guwahati on Friday and sit in a meeting with the party top brass here before joining the party on August 2.
“Till now Sushanta Borgohain is a Congress MLA. The Congress leadership has not heard from him about his joining the ruling party,” Goswami said addressing a press conference here.
“Few days ago I had a telephonic talk with Sushanta Borgohain and he had told me that he would not join the BJP. But now he is in the headlines for his willingness to join the saffron party,” Goswami said.
Borgohain’s shifting to the saffron camp is being considered a major success, as the BJP was planning to have a strong leader to represent the Ahom community in order to give a tough fight to Congress parliamentarian and former three-time chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s son Gaurav Gogoi.
Borgohain will be the second MLA from the Congress to join the BJP after the saffron party came to power in Assam for the second time.
In the recently concluded Assam Assembly polls, Borgohain had defeated BJP candidate Kushal Duwari in Thowra constituency and was elected to the 126-member Legislative Assembly.
Not letting other leaders rise in the Congress has been one of the the prime reasons behind several big names quitting the party since the recently concluded Assembly elections in the state.
Reacting to this, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Those who believe in the Indian civilization and the ideology of BJP will surely join the BJP.”
