In a powerful story of hope emerging from loss, clinicians at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, Navi Mumbai, facilitated a multi-organ cadaveric donation that transformed one family’s grief into a lifeline for several patients desperately awaiting transplants. This marks the 24th cadaveric organ donation of Mumbai in 2026, and the third at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Navi Mumbai, reaffirming the hospital’s growing role in the region’s organ donation ecosystem.

The donor was a 50-year-old female from Panvel, Navi Mumbai, a working professional, whose life was cut short following Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage and Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, which left her brain death. Despite their unimaginable grief, her family chose to look beyond their own pain. They consented to donate her heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, and corneas, helping breathe new life into patients on the organ waitlist.

Through seamless coordination between the hospital’s transplant coordinators, intensivists, surgeons, nursing teams, and clinical staff, her organs were retrieved; allocation was done in strict accordance with established state organ allocation protocols by ZTCC. The liver and a kidney were allocated to Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, where both transplant procedures were successfully performed for critically ill recipients who had been waiting for a compatible match.

Among them is a 48-year-old male, a businessowner from Panvel with end-stage kidney disease, who had been on the state transplant waiting list since 1st July 2017. With support from his wife and daughter, he had faced nearly nine years of dialysis, and uncertainty. His successful kidney transplant also marks the second cadaveric kidney transplant conducted at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, in 2026. The transplant was performed by Dr Gaurav Kasat, Consultant – Urology, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Navi Mumbai.

The second recipient is 55-year-old working professional from Kandivali, Mumbai, who was put on the transplant last on 24th April 2026, following liver failure. Prayers of his wife, daughter, and a son were answered when he received the cadaveric organ today. His recovering is a story of medical triumph and a reminder of what timely donation can mean when the system works as it should. His procedure marks the second cadaveric liver transplant conducted at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, in 2026. The transplant was performed by Dr Vikram Raut, Consultant-Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgery, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Navi Mumbai

Reflecting on the significance of this donation, Mr. Nitin Kamaria, Facility Director, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, Navi Mumbai, said, “Cadaveric organ donation remains one of the most powerful gifts of life and hope. Every successful organ donation not only saves multiple lives but also strengthens public awareness around the importance of timely organ donation decisions. At Fortis Hiranandani Hospital Vashi, we remain committed to advancing transplant infrastructure, supporting donor families with compassion, and encouraging greater community participation in organ donation initiatives.”

This case is a testament to what becomes possible when clinical excellence, institutional coordination, and human courage converge. It underscores, once again, the critical role that cadaveric organ donation plays in bridging the vast gap between organ demand and availability in India, and the profound, rippling hope it offers to the thousands of patients and families who are still waiting for their turn.
