The Supreme Court has refused to consider a contempt petition filed against National Register of Citizens (NRC) coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma, but has agreed to consider a revised petition filed by Jamiyat Ulema-e-Hind. A bench comprising Chief Justice SA Boelder, Justice A S Bopanna and Justice V Ramasubramanyam dismissed the contempt petition against Sarma.

The bench had asked the petitioner to amend the petition to challenge the notification issued by the NRC coordinator on October 13, 2020. After hearing the petitioners, the apex court ordered the case to be listed next week to enable the petitioner to amend the contempt petition. The apex will consider the petition filed by the court, which is against the notification issued by Sarma to remove the names of ineligible persons in the NRC final list. The NRC coordinator, while issuing the notification, had asked all the District Collectors and District Registrars to take action against those who have been declared foreigners in the NRC lists and whose cases are pending before the foreign tribunals. In a petition filed in the court, it has been argued that the previous state coordinator had also done the verification work, and the names were included in the list after rigorous examination.
