Drastic action against narcotic drugs in Assam

GUWAHATI : In Assam, violent action against drugs is underway. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma set fire to the drugs seized himself on Saturday and Sunday. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Assam will no longer be a safe route for drug traffickers. The Chief Minister attended a function at Deepu and Golaghat on Saturday and Sunday to dispose of drugs worth Rs 400 crore seized by Assam Police during the operation to create “Drugs Mukta Assam”.

The chief minister set fire to a portion of the drugs seized by assam police. The burnt drugs include 11.88 kg morphine, 2.89 kg crystal meth, 3.47 kg heroin, 102.91 kg cannabis and 2,03,384 tablets. The Chief Minister said that the state government adopted zero tolerance against drugs as it has severely affected many families, posing a threat to the future of the younger generation.He said that though earlier drug dealers used Assam as a transit route, it gradually emerged as a big market. The Chief Minister further said that despite strict action, drug dealers continue to work in connivance with some bad elements within the system.

 Considering the nefarious designs, the Chief Minister said that the government has given full operational freedom to the police within the ambit of law to take strong and decisive action against drug dealers to rid the society of this evil. He also said that the number of drugs seized can be only 10 per cent of the medicines coming into the State. The medicines going all over India through the North Eastern State will cost Rs 4,000 crore. Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “They are committed to creating a drug-free Assam. For that, we will go to any extent. In order to make Assam drug free, the police have been given full freedom to save the future of the youth.The CM further said that “Today we have burnt drugs in public. The Assam Police wants to send a strong message through this that we will adopt a zero tolerance policy against it.
