Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha demands Nepali Language and Culture Study Centre

Kokrajhar: The Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri District Committee of Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha demanded installation of Nepali Language and Culture Study Centre at the proposed Central University at Barama.

The Nepali Sahitya Sabha committees of the four districts submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India through the Principal Secretary, B.T.C. today placing their various demands focussing primarily on the Nepali Language and literature in the four district of Bodoland Territorial region and demanded installation of Nepali Language and Culture Study Centre at the proposed Central University at Barama.

The Sabha claimed that a sizable Nepali Speaking (Gorkha) Community have been residing in BTAD region for more than 150 years permanently, “the Toponym also indicates that many revenue villages are recorded in Nepali names like- Nepalpara, Nepaligoan, Koilamaila, Manglajhora, Ultapani, Baljhora, Athiabari etc. (vide Census manual, 2011). The Gorkha Community has remarkable contribution for upliftment of the region since long, it stated.

Stating that the Bodo peace agreement which was signed on signed on 29 January 2020 in between the government of India, government of Assam and Bodoland Movement groups including all four factions of insurgent group National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) and All Bodo Students Union will boost a new dimension in all round development, peace and tranquility in BTAD region, the memorandum opined that  in the BTR agreement many provisions have been made, like the proposed Upendranath Brahma Central University at Barama and urge to include a Centre for Nepali Language and Culture in the proposed Central University. “Besides, a handsome budget may be earmarked annually for the Centre in order to R&D purpose of Nepali Language and Culture, it said.
