Avian birds of 22 families spotted in Laokhowa – Burhachapori wildlife sanctuary

NAGAON : Around 71,902 avian birds from different species belonging to around 22 families were counted in Laokhowa – Burhachapori wildlife sanctuary during a recent counting exercise.

In the exercise, the highest number of species are from family anatidae which are the family of ducks and geese. The top three species counted by number are eurasian coot, common teal and greylag goose. Besides, around 70 waterfowl species found in the sanctuary and 31 are migratory species visiting Laokhowa – Burhachapori from different parts of the world including Europe, Central Asia and East Asia, sources claimed.

     Speaking to this correspondent here, DFO Nagaon Wildlife Division,  Arun Vignesh (IFS) said the number of the birds had been increased from 9244 in 2020 to 71902 in 2021, apparently mounting to a rise by 675 per cent. He ensured it too that the maximum number of birds were found in Rowmari Beel of the sanctuary where 59,853 birds were counted and it was the highest number of birds counted from a single wetland in the entire state.

He further claimed that rare kinds of birds such as Baer’s Pochard, great scaup, pied avocet, glossy ibis slender billed vulture and cinereous vulture were also spotted in the sanctuary.

It is pertinent to mention that Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve Authority has conducted the counting census of avians in the sanctuary on February 6 and 7 last.

During the census, the special team identified 10 wetlands in Laokhowa – Burhachapori wildlife sanctuary and 10 seasoned birders were involved as enumerators.
