Bengaluru : Four residential communities across Bengaluru will soon supply treated wastewater to nearby industries. The initiative, implemented across Kolte Patil i-Towers, Nirman Layout, Himagiri Residency, and Purva Palm Beach, enables excess treated water from residential sewage treatment plants (STPs) to be further purified into high-quality water and supplied to industries in Electronic City, Jigani, and surrounding industrial areas.
Collectively, the four residential communities will contribute more than 25 tanker loads of treated water daily, averaging 48,000 to 60,000 litres per apartment per day, reducing dependence on freshwater resources for industries.
Each of these apartments have partnered with Boson Whitewater, a water utility company that converts STP-treated water into high-quality potable water. The treated water supplied through the initiative is processed to achieve low dissolved solids and hardness levels, making it suitable for various industrial applications and reducing the need for additional treatment.
Commenting on the initiative, Gowthaman Desingh Co-Founder, Boson Whitewater, said, “We need to rethink how we use and reuse the water that is already available within the city. Every day, residential communities generate large volumes of treated water that often have limited reuse avenues. Through these partnerships with apartments, we are creating a circular ecosystem where excess treated water from apartments is upgraded into high-quality industrial water and supplied to nearby industries. Our aim is to build a decentralised water reuse model that can help cities like Bengaluru improve water security while reducing dependence on freshwater sources.”
Pranjal Kumar, Resident of Kolte Patil iTowers, said, “We have been looking for sustainable ways to manage excess treated water from our STP. While we reuse it for landscaping and maintenance activities, there was still a significant surplus that required disposal. Rachita Bhujle, Resident of Kolte Patil iTowers said “This initiative provides a practical solution by converting that excess water into a resource for nearby industries. Apart from reducing our disposal costs, it also gives residents the satisfaction of knowing that water is being responsibly reused rather than wasted and also saving money in disposing of the excess STP treated water for the apartment.”
Key highlights from each apartment
● Kolte Patil i-Towers Electronic City: A 438-unit residential complex housing nearly 1,600 residents, Kolte Patil i-Towers generates approximately 7 tanker loads of excess treated water every day. Previously, the association incurred costs to transport and dispose of this water. The project is currently operational, and the community now supplies the treated water for industrial reuse in the Electronics City region.
● Nirman Layout, Jigani: One of the largest residential layouts in the area, Nirman Layout operates two large STPs and generates significant quantities of surplus treated water. A 60,000-litre-per-day recovery system has been established, enabling up to five tanker loads of water to be supplied daily to industries in the Jigani industrial area.
● Himagiri Residency, Electronic City: The nearly 300-unit residential community is expected to contribute around four tanker loads of treated water per day once operational by the end of June.
● Purva Palm Beach: Home to more than 10,000 residents across a 19-acre campus, the project is expected to supply between eight to ten tanker loads of treated water daily for industrial use by the end of this year.
