Bennett, Coleman & Co Ltd (‘BCCL’) and OpenAI today announced a strategic partnership to help readers in India and around the world discover journalism from across the BCCL’s publications and digital properties, and at the same time build robust context and attribution for ChatGPT users. The partnership will enhance how content from participating BCCL publications appears in ChatGPT: when select summaries or excerpts are surfaced in response to relevant user questions, responses will identify the publication and include a direct link to the original article, allowing readers to access the complete reporting and context on BCCL platforms.
The partnership will include content from The Times of India, The Economic Times and other publications, covering live reporting and content therein.
Mohit Jain, Chief Operating Officer and Board Member, BCCL, said, “For almost two centuries, BCCL has believed that journalism is a public trust – rooted in facts, guided by independent judgment, and sustained by the trust of our readers. As technology has evolved, we have continually embraced new ways to make our content accessible to readers wherever and however they choose to engage with it. Our partnership with OpenAI is another step in that journey, enabling audiences to discover journalism from across our publications while preserving the source, context, and identity of the original reporting.”
Varun Shetty, Vice President – Media Partnerships, OpenAI, said, “BCCL is an important part of how millions of people understand India and the world. This partnership will help ChatGPT users discover reporting from BCCL’s English and Indian-language publications, with clear attribution and direct links to the original articles. We want to build practical, constructive relationships with publishers in India. That means listening to their priorities, respecting editorial independence and developing products that help readers connect with news.”
BCCL and OpenAI will also explore how OpenAI technology can support new products, reader services and internal workflows across the Group. Potential areas include archive discovery, research, data analysis, translation, reader services, and business operations. Any newsroom use will remain subject to the editorial standards, policies and human oversight of the relevant BCCL publication.
The partnership is part of OpenAI’s work with publishers around the world to improve access to reliable information and explore useful applications of AI across news products and publishing operations.
Participating BCCL publications will retain complete and independent editorial control over their journalism. Their editors and journalists will continue to make all decisions about reporting, verification, editing and publication. OpenAI will have no role in determining their coverage or editorial positions.
