Mumbai: The premiere of India’s Best Dancer Season 5 on Sony Entertainment Television celebrating India Wala Dance turns into a nostalgic celebration of Bollywood’s dance legacy as the judges and host revisit the evolution of dance in Indian cinema.

During the discussion, host Harsh asked the judges, “Vo kaunsi pehli Bollywood film thi jisme dancing ki pehli jhalak dikhayi di thi?”

To this, Jaaved Jaaferi replied, “According to me it was Aplam Chaplam, it was a fantastic dance movie.” The conversation continued as Harsh turned to Terence Lewis and asked, “Terence Sir aap kuch kehna chahenge?”

Responding, Terence Lewis said, “Agar sirf industry ki baat kare toh Vyjayanthimala was one of the best. Jo South ke heroines hain, chahe Hema Malini ho, Sridevi ji ho, Vyjayanthimala ho, unka technique aur training bahut kamaal ka tha. Unhone classical training ki wajah se Bollywood dance ko alag level par le gaye. Phir jab Madhuri Dixit aayi toh ek nayi raunak le aayi, unka expression amazing tha. Aur Karisma Kapoor ne toh itna filmy touch diya hai.”

Adding to the discussion, Harsh stated, “Main bata deta hoon, Hindustan ki pehli film jisme dancing ki pehli jhalak dikhayi di thi woh film thi Alam Ara, jisme Prithviraj Kapoor ji the. Tab unhone yeh nahi socha hoga ki aage chalke unki great-granddaughter Karisma Kapoor Bollywood dance ka chehra ban jaayegi.”

The nostalgia continued as Jaaved Jaaferi added, “I remember Prithviraj Kapoor ji, and after that Raj Kapoor ji, Shammi Kapoor ji, Shashi Kapoor ji all of them had an incredible screen presence and personality. Prithviraj Kapoor ji, in particular, had one of the most impressive personalities and physique.”

The episode beautifully blends nostalgia, and admiration, celebrating how Bollywood dance has evolved through generations and continues to inspire today’s performers.
