Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has granted interim protection to producer Nikhil Dwivedi’s Saffron Magicworks in an alleged dispute, directing that production house cannot be declared a defaulter on the basis of an arbitral award.
By an order dated 9 September 2026, the Hon’ble Justice Arif S. Doctor directed that Defendant No. 1 Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (“IMPPA”) shall not, until further orders of the Court, take any coercive action against Saffron Magicworks, consequent to the impugned Award dated 3 July 2026.
The Court also recorded and accepted a statement made on instructions by counsel for Defendant No. 2 that it would not act upon the impugned Award for a prescribed period.
Saffron Magicworks had approached the High Court challenging the purported Award and seeking protection against its implementation and the consequences flowing from it. It is case of Saffron Magicworks that the IMPPA could not have passed the award against it as IMPPA had no jurisdiction to adjudicate the dispute.
The Court further permitted Saffron to amend the plaint and the Interim Application. Advocates Rashmin Khandekar, Dhruva Gandhy, Madhu Gadodia, Vivek Dwivedi and Aryan Garg, instructed by Anand and Naik, appeared for Saffron Magicworks. Along with Kartikeya Desai, Saffron’s Chief Legal Officer.
