Bus plunges into canal in K’taka, 23 killed

At least 23 passengers were killed when a private bus plunged into VS canal of Kanagamaradi village in Pandavapura Taluk in Mandya Dist of Karnataka on Saturday.

The accident occurred when the driver lost control while steering the vehicle on canal bund road and the bus fell into 12 feet deep water. 

About 30 passengers were travelling in the ill-fated bus when the mishap took place.

The President Ramnath Kovind and  Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed shock over the incident and condoled the deaths.

Congress  President Rahul Gandhi also has expressed deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.

Local people and fire brigade from Mysore rushed to the accident spot to rescue of the survivors and 23 bodies have been recovered so far. Efforts are on to retrieve the remaining bodies. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has expressed shock over the incident and ordered officials to take up rescue operation immediately. 

The Government has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to the family members of those who lost in the mishap.
