Fishermen in Rameswaram are on strike following the arrest of their 19 fellows by Srilankan Navy while fishing mid-sea. They are from Pudukkottai, Nagappattinam and Rameswaram. They were held last Saturday and have been remanded by the courts of the island nation. A fisherman, fearing attack, is said to have jumped out of the boat and drowned. The fishermen associations demand the immediate release of the apprehended people and to put an end to attacks on them and arrests. More than seven hundred boats are anchored on the shores following the strike.
