Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi’s ‘Walk of Confidence’ Brings Together Patients, Doctors, and Community to Showcase Transformative Journey Toward Renewed Mobility

Bengaluru: In a powerful display of medical triumph and human resilience, more than 500 participants gathered this weekend for Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi’s “Walk of Confidence” event, celebrating patients who have successfully undergone robotic total knee replacement (TKR) surgery and returned to active, independent lives.

The three-kilometer walkathon, which started and ended at Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, transformed city streets into a moving testimony of modern orthopedic achievement. Participants included robotic knee-replacement patients ranging from recent surgical cases to those five years post-procedure, senior citizens facing mobility challenges, orthopedic specialists, and community supporters from across Bengaluru neighborhoods including Nagarbhavi, Chandra Layout, RR Nagar, Kengeri, Muddalpalya, Vijayanagar, Rajajinagar, and Magadi Road.

The Journey from Debilitation to Independence

For many participants, the walk represented more than just three kilometers—it symbolized a return to normalcy after years of debilitating knee pain that had robbed them of simple pleasures.

“Before my robotic knee replacement, I couldn’t walk to the corner shop without severe pain,” shared 68-year-old Gopal M., who underwent surgery six months ago. “Today, I walked three kilometers without thinking twice about my knees. This isn’t just a walk—it’s freedom.”

The event highlighted how persistent knee problems often silently erode quality of life, making everyday activities like climbing stairs, walking to markets, or even standing for extended periods increasingly difficult without timely intervention.

Robotic Precision: A New Standard in Knee Care

At the forefront of the event was Dr. Manjunath Kodihally, Senior Consultant in Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement Surgery at Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, who led the initiative.

“A successful knee replacement transcends surgical precision—it’s about restoring confidence,” Dr. Kodihally explained. “Robotic-assisted surgery provides millimeter-accurate placement that preserves surrounding tissues, often resulting in faster recovery and better long-term outcomes. Today’s walk demonstrates that patients aren’t just surviving—they’re thriving.”

The robotic TKR approach uses CT scans to create 3D models of each patient’s unique knee anatomy, allowing surgeons to plan implant placement with exceptional precision. While recent studies show comparable outcomes between robotic and conventional methods in the first year, robotic procedures may reduce soft tissue injury and blood loss during surgery while enhancing alignment accuracy.

Community in Motion

The walkathon served multiple purposes beyond celebration:

Awareness Building: Educating the public about knee health and available treatment options

Support Network Creation: Connecting current patients with successful post-surgical patients

Demystification: Showing that knee replacement surgery isn’t the “end” but rather a new beginning

Prevention Focus: Encouraging early evaluation for persistent knee problems

Mr. Ratheef Naik, Facility Director at Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi Road, emphasized the community aspect: “This walk wasn’t just about medical achievement—it was about human connection. Watching patients who once struggled to walk short distances confidently complete three kilometers with their doctors and neighbors walking beside them—that’s the real success story.”

Patient Voices Lead the Way

Throughout the route, conversations flowed naturally between patients at different stages of recovery. Recent surgical patients walked alongside those three or four years post-procedure, asking questions and receiving encouragement.

“I wish I hadn’t waited so long,” confessed 72-year-old Meena P., who underwent surgery nine months ago. “I suffered needlessly for years, afraid of surgery. Seeing so many people walking confidently today—many older than me—would have given me the courage to seek help sooner.”

Looking Forward: The Path Ahead

The event concluded back at Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi with reflections on how far joint replacement technology has advanced and how much further it can go. Organizers emphasized that while robotic assistance represents current technological advancement, patient-centered care remains the true differentiator.

“Technology is a tool—compassion is the treatment,” Dr. Kodihally summarized. “What we celebrate today isn’t just robotic precision but human resilience. Our hope is that anyone watching or reading about this walk understands that persistent knee pain doesn’t have to be permanent—help exists, and a full, active life after treatment is not just possible but probable.”

The Walk of Confidence stands as both celebration and call to action: a vivid reminder that mobility challenges need not define one’s golden years, and that with timely medical intervention, the journey from pain to progress is within reach.
