Heavy to moderate rain in Nagaland in next week

Dimapur: Heavy to moderate rainfall activity is expected in Nagaland over the next week.

In its weather update on Thursday, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), in coordination with the Regional Metrological Centre, Guwahati, said the rainy season is going to continue till about October 20.  

The update said no extreme weather activity is expected but moderate rain and thunderstorms with lightning are likely to occur, mostly during evening and night till October 6. Improvement of the weather is expected from October 7 onward and light weather activity between October  7 to October 10.

During this period, thundershowers and lightning accompanied by heavy rams are expected in Kiphire, Kohima, Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Peren, Phek and Tuensang district. Moderate and light rain is expected in Dimapur district.

The update said a weather system has formed in the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to persist over the region for the next four to five days.

Nagaland registered a rainfall deficiency of 26% during the monsoon season from June 1 to September 30.

The NSDMA requested all the district disaster management authorities and other line departments to remain alert and attend to any emergencies caused by natural calamities to save lives and properties during this period.

It urged the public to be vigilant against lighting and heavy rainfall in the region during this period. It also advised them not to shelter under large trees and near the river banks to prevent unnecessary risk to life from lightning and landslide.
