Heroic act makes home guard a regular police constable

GUWAHATI: Assam cabinet on Thursday decided to promote home guard Borsing Bey, who led to seizure of a huge quantity of drugs with Rs 12 crore in Karbi Anglong’s Dillai, from his post of a home guard to a constable.

Bey had refused to accept bribe from the drug dealer and led to the recovery of three kilograms of high-quality crystal methamphetamine worth Rs 12 crore from a Guwahati-bound bus in Dillai check gate on Monday night.

“From today Borsing Bey has been appointed as a constable of Assam Police. He has been promoted for his heroic and honest act,” parliamentary affairs minister Pijush Hazarika told reporters minutes after the cabinet meeting.

Already, impressed by his ‘honest act’, director-general of police (DGP) Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta has rewarded Bey with Rs 1 lakh.

He is posted to Dillai police station in Karbi Anglong district.

As part of administrative reform, the state cabinet empowered the deputy commissioners to allot land for government institutions at rural areas on the basis of recommendations of land acquisition committees.

Accordingly, from now onwards no file on such matters would be required to be sent by the deputy commissioners to the revenue department, an official note here said.

On payment of compensation to the families of the victims of man-elephant conflict, the PCCF cum HOFF is empowered to take decisions as per recommendation of the divisional forest officer (DFO). Accordingly, from now onwards no file on such matters is required to be sent by the PCCF to the forest & environment department, it said.

The cabinet decided that oil companies like OIL, ONGC etc will have to pay minimum Rs. 12 lakh per bigha for land acquisitions within 10 km radius of the town for the acquisition of private land. Similarly, for land acquisition outside 10 km radius of the town, oil companies will have to pay a minimum Rs. 10 lakh per bigha.

The cabinet also approved the incentives earlier announced for waiving micro-finance loans, it added.
