GUWAHATI : The Home Ministry has sought another 6 months to frame rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act. The ministry has informed Parliament on Tuesday. The ministry has sought extension of time from rajya sabha and lok sabha committees by January 9, 2022. The CAA allows the Hindu, Parsi, Sikh, Christian, Jain and Buddhist communities who have been subjected to minority and persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to acquire Indian citizenship.Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi had asked whether the last date for notifying CAA rules was fixed or not. He had also asked the ministry the reason in case the date was not fixed.

On this, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said that CAA was notified on 12th December 2019 and it came into effect on 10th January, 2020. In his reply, Roy said, the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha committees have been requested to extend the time till 09.01.2022 to fix the rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019. President Ram Nath Kovind agreed to the law on December 12, 2019. It was widely opposed after the CAA came forward.

Many opposition political parties and groups in the country opposed the implementation of the law. Hindu, Parsi, Sikh, Christian, Jain and Buddhist communities coming to India till December 31, 2014 will not be considered illegal migrants due to religious persecution in three countries. At the same time, they will be able to acquire Citizenship of India under the provisions of the Law.
