How selling on Amazon enabled Somani Packaging to replace millions of plastic units across India

At a time when plastic disposables were deeply embedded in daily life, mounting landfill pressure and packaging waste exposed a critical gap in the market for practical alternatives. To bridge this gap, Somani Packaging was launched in 2014 in Hyderabad with a clear mission: to make functional, everyday sustainable packaging widely accessible. Over the years, Amazon India has been instrumental in amplifying the brand’s visibility, unlocking wider access to eco-friendly options for conscious consumers nationwide.

From its early days, the brand operated in a space where eco-friendly alternatives were still far from mainstream and largely limited to niche demand. What began as a small setup with a limited product range has grown into a sustainable packaging and tableware business serving more than 40,000 customers across India. Today, the portfolio spans over 300 eco-friendly products used across premium hospitality, corporate, and lifestyle segments, including Marriott, Hyatt Hotels, Radisson, Sula Wines, BCCI, RCB and YouTube offices.

From a bedroom startup to a nationwide sustainable brand

For years, the core challenge was not a lack of demand but visibility and access. Sustainable alternatives existed but were fragmented, difficult to discover and rarely part of mainstream procurement behavior, allowing plastic to dominate due to familiarity and convenience. The India biodegradable tableware and packaging market reflects this steady shift towards more responsible consumption patterns, projected to grow at a stable CAGR of 0.6% as awareness and adoption rise across sectors.

This changed when the brand expanded its presence on Amazon. This move enabled discoverability at scale, connecting Somani Packaging with customers across India who were actively searching for responsible choices and successfully expanding their market presence. This shift effectively bridged supply with an existing, underserved market. From just 10 products in its early phase, the company has scaled to over 300 SKUs today. This growth has been directly shaped by online customer behavior, search trends, repeat purchases and reviews which continue to guide product development and category expansion.

Commenting on the overall journey, Mr. Nikhil Somani, Founder and CEO, Somani Packaging said, “Sustainability does not always require big changes, even small everyday choices can create a meaningful impact over time. If businesses and consumers consciously choose eco-friendly alternatives wherever possible, together we can build a much more sustainable future.”

Driving sustainable choices across India

Across the country, small businesses and large manufacturers are building a robust ecosystem for biodegradable tableware and packaging, making environmentally responsible options more accessible than ever. While disposables remain a staple at events, cafés, and workplaces, there is a distinct shift in what people are choosing. Driven by rising awareness, seamless adoption and better availability, eco-friendly alternatives are steadily replacing conventional plastics.

Through the platform, the brand has served over 40,000 customers across India and delivered orders to more than 25 states and union territories, including remote and emerging markets such as Ladakh, Mizoram, Pondicherry, Tuticorin, and Asansol. The reach which Amazon provided has been truly transformational for the business.

This transition becomes especially evident during festive seasons and periods of high consumption. When demand for disposable products peaks, sustainable alternatives gain their strongest traction as buyers actively seek solutions that balance scale, usability and convenience. Conversations around sustainability are now much more positive and for Somani Packaging, business has been busier than ever, achieving a steady growth of 25% year-on-year basis.

A growing shift towards conscious consumption

What is changing is not consumption itself but what is considered acceptable in everyday use. Convenience continues to matter but it is increasingly being balanced with environmental responsibility, particularly in categories involving frequent usage.

This World Environment Day, the narrative reflects a steady evolution shaped by accessibility, repetition, and practicality. Through its ecosystem, Amazon India continues to enable this shift by making sustainable choices more discoverable, helping brands like Somani Packaging reach customers across the country.
