Brain health is in risk globally and brain disorders are the major cause of decline in disability-adjusted life-years and the second leading cause of death worldwide. It is a major threat in our country too. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has led, both directly and indirectly, to substantial neurological morbidity. SIMS Hospital and Institute of Neurosciences, celebrated Brain Week to showcase the significance of brain health which is vital for mental, social and physical wellbeing, educated public on how to improve brain health, prevention, access to treatment and rehabilitation.
Brain week was celebrated with an awareness session every day at the Neurosciences department with expert doctors participating. Topics for discussion were on the importance of World Brain Day, brain health, Stroke management, Head injury, Epilepsy, Headache and Brain Tumor. It was followed by a live quiz competition for the nurses and the doctors and Poster presentation were also organised as part of this observance week.
Dr. U. Meenakshisundaram said, “Brain health is vital for the mankind, and it is unfortunate that it is a leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of death. A startling report by WHO states that the four largest contributors of neurological issues were stroke (42.2%) migraine (16.3%) dementia (10.4%) and meningitis (7.9%). Epilepsy (5%) ranked fifth. Parkinson’s disease, propelled by an increasingly large ageing population, is a fast growing neurological disorder. We must address this as primary health concern and adopt a healthy lifestyle by doing regular exercise, intake of proper diet and nutrition, regular health check-ups, sleep and relaxation, improving mental fitness by doing brain stimulating activities and healthy work life balance. We at SIMS Hospital educate patients on the importance of brain health and its impact on the overall wellbeing“
