Interpol General Assembly: PM Modi calls for global cooperation to fight emerging threats

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for global cooperation to deal with terrorism, corruption, drug trafficking, poching and organized crimes. He said, when threats are global, the response cannot be local as the pace of change of these dangers is faster than earlier. He was speaking at the 90th Interpol General Assembly in New Delhi today.

The Prime Minister emphasized that there is a need for the global community to work even faster to eliminate safe havens of criminal activities. He said, there can be no safe havens for the corrupt, terrorists, drug cartels, poaching gangs or organized crime.

On the threats of transnational terrorism, the Prime Minister said, India has been combating it for several decades, even before the world recognised it. He said, Indians knew the price of safety and security as thousands of people have made the ultimate sacrifice in this fight. He said, terrorism is no longer fought only in the physical space but is spreading rapidly through online radicalization and cyber threats.

He reiterated the need to further develop international strategies to tackle this menace. He emphasized on the establishment of early detection and warning systems, protection of transportation services, ensuring security for communication and critical infrastructure, intelligence exchange and technical assistance. On the dangers of corruption and financial crimes, the Prime Minister said, these crimes have harmed the welfare of the citizens of many countries. He said, the corrupt take money from the poorest and then push them into illegal activities.

The Prime Minister stressed the need to devise procedures and protocols to increase cooperation between police and law enforcement agencies. He said, a safe and secure world is shared responsibility and when the forces of good cooperate, the forces of crime cannot operate. Highlighting the role of Interpol in tackling global threats, the Prime Minister expressed hope that the 90th Interpol General Assembly will prove to be an effective and successful platform for tackling crime, corruption and terrorism.

The Prime Minister remarked that Interpol has connected police organizations globally across 195 countries for the past 99 years. He said Interpol will be celebrating 100 years of its inception next year. The Prime Minister released a commemorative postal stamp and a 100 rupees coin to mark the 90th Interpol General Assembly.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Interpol President Ahmed Naser Al Rais, Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock, CBI Director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
