KFON School Internet Service: Administrative Direction to Ensure Compliance with Existing Provisions

Thiruvananthapuram : The service charges associated with KFON internet connectivity in schools are not a newly imposed financial liability by the present government. From the inception of the KFON project, it has been clearly stipulated under the existing provisions that institutions, including government and aided schools, are responsible for bearing the applicable service charges.

In 2024, the Government, through an order issued by the Electronics & Information Technology (E&IT) Department, directed government institutions and educational institutions to avail KFON internet services and bear the associated service charges. Pursuant to this Government Order, KFON has been providing internet connections to the concerned institutions and issuing demand notes towards the applicable service charges.

However, due to delays in the remittance of service charges by various institutions, outstanding dues have accumulated over the past two years. It is in this context that the General Education Department has issued an administrative communication reminding institutions to make timely payment of service charges and to ensure compliance with the existing Government Order and prescribed guidelines.

Therefore, the recent communication does not impose any new financial liability on schools, nor does it introduce any new policy decision. It is merely an administrative reminder to comply with the existing Government Order and established provisions. The objective of the communication is to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of KFON services and to avoid the accumulation of outstanding dues through timely payment of service charges.
