Colombo: Sri Lanka is witnessing huge protests across the country and the capital City Colombo is totally under siege after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country on Tuesday to an undisclosed destination.  Gotabaya had promised to resign as president of the country on Wednesday but he fled the, possibly to Maldives, without resigning.  The enraged protesters were raising slogans against Gotabaya demanding his resignation.

Reports from reliable sources indicate that Gotabaya-appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe  is inclined to take over as acting President in place of Gotabaya, but protesters are vehemently opposed to this proposal.

Thousands of protesters have stormed Prime Minister Wickremesinghe’s private residence which was set ablaze by agitators on 9 July. However, Wickremesinghe has already offered to resign from the post in the event of formation of an all-party government in the country. But the infuriated protesters are not ready to accept any such arguments.
