Mahadeo Jalan’s contribution to Assam’s economy and society : Dr Sarma

 GUWAHATI : The Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanata Biswa Sarma today visited the residence of late Mahadeo Jalan at Dibrugarh today and spent some time with the bereaved family members. Eminent entrepreneur, social worker and tea planter Mahadeo Jalan had devoted his entire life towards tea plantation and welfare of the tea tribe community in Assam. He was instrumental in bridging the gap between the government, the workers and the tea garden managements.

Paying his rich tributes to late Jalan, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said that he (Mahadeo Jalan) was also a philanthropist and had donated lands for iconic locations in Dibrugarh such as the Jagannath temple, AMCH, the indoor and outdoor sport stadiums, the Murleidhor Jalan bus stand, various Naamghars among others. Jalan’s contribution to Assam's economy and society will always be remembered, Dr. Sarma added. Chief Minister during his visit to Dibrugarh also paid a visit to the residence of renowned advocate, educationist, social worker late Premadhar Borgohain at Chiring Chapori, Dibrugarh today and spent some time with his bereaved family members. Late Premadhar Borgohain was also a prominent trade union leader.

He was a champion of the cause of the underprivileged tea garden workers, peasants and landless labourers and devoted his time and capabilities towards realization of their legal rights. He had a long and illustrious career as a prominent advocate, spanning a period of around 50 years. He also served as the President of the Dibrugarh Bar Association. His demise is a great loss for the social life, Dr. Sarma added. Chief Minister Dr Sarma also visited Sri Sri Jagannath Temple at Srikshetra, Dibrugarh and bowed before Lord Jagannath. He offered his prayers to the almighty for the wellbeing of the people of Assam. The Chief Minister was accompanied by Power Minister Bimal Bora, former Union Minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar and several MLAs during his visit to the temple.
