Mumbai : The Mumbai Sessions Court has temporarily stayed the legal proceedings against lyricist Javed Akhtar, providing relief in a complaint lodged by actress Kangana Ranaut.
This complaint pertains to her dispute with actor Hrithik Roshan. Javed Akhtar challenged the summons in a revision application, asserting that denying the stay could lead to multiple legal actions between him and Kangana.
The court suspended the criminal complaint proceedings until a final verdict is reached on the revision application, set to be heard on October 18. Ranaut’s complaint, filed in September 2021, accused Akhtar of criminal intimidation and extortion during a 2016 conflict involving Hrithik Roshan.
While an extortion charge was dropped, Akhtar was summoned under Sections 506 and 509 of the IPC. Akhtar’s legal team argued that the complaint was filed beyond the prescribed three-year limit from the alleged incident and suggested that it was a retaliatory move against his defamation complaint. The court granted an interim stay, considering both sides’ arguments.
