Not to close AIR, DD regional stations said Minister in Parliament

New Delhi: Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Dr L Murugan on Tuesday said in Lok Sabha that there is no plan of winding up any of the regional stations of All India Radio and Doordarshan. Answering questions, he said, only technology and content up-gradation is being undertaken now. The minister said the Doordarshan’s Tamil channel called ‘Podhigai’ has been upgraded to telecast programmes in Hi-Definition format, the first among the regional channels to the thumping of tables by opposition members from Tamil Nadu.

Dr Murugan said, the government is committed to development of modernization and strengthening of Doordarshan and Akashwani. He said, Grant-in-Aid is being provided to Prasar Bharati under Central sector scheme Broadcasting infrastructure and Network Development.

The Minister said, the whole country is being covered by the networks of Doordarshan and All India Radio. He said, the mobile app, NewsonAIR enables anyone in the world to listen to All India Radio. Dr Murugan said, they are available on social media platforms as well.

To the question on Digital FM channels, the minister said the suggestion would be considered.
