Protest against attack on journalist

Kokrajhar: Media fraternity in Kokrajhar today staged a sit in protest dharna against the attacked on Jayanta Debnath, Reporter of Asomiya Pratidin by a police personal on Monday afternoon at Basugaon town of Chirang district.

Members of Kokrajhar Press Club and Bodoland Journalists Association carried out protest by wearing black badge.

A memorandum was submitted to the chief minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and BTR chief executive member Pramod Boro through the Deputy Commissioner Kokrajhar Varnali Deka demanding stern action against the police personnel involved in the attacked and safety and security to working journalists.

Jayanta Debnath, was beaten up by two constables of the Assam Police Monday after he questioned them for not wearing helmets while on a two-wheeler.

 In the memorandum signed by president and secretary of KPC-Monalisa Sarma and Hantigiri Narzary termed the attack on journalist Jayanta Debnath as “it’s not only attack on media person but an attack on the 4th pillar of the system and brought a sense of insecurity among the media persons especially working in small town and remote places”.

Condemning the incident in strongest term, the media persons said the police was enjoying excessive power which will have bad implications on the freedom of expression if there is no intervention from the chief minister. They demanded immediate inquiry and arrest of police personnel involved and punishment and ensures safety and security of journalists by easing atrocities on media persons.

Media persons in Chirang, Baksa, Gossaigaon, Udalguri and Tamulpur also carried out protest against the attacked.
