New Delhi: The Nifty and the Sensex and today plunged more than one percent. The key domestic stocks fell amid mixed cues from the global equity markets. The Nifty closed below 17,800 level and the Sensex finished below the 59,500 mark.
The NSE Nifty declined 181 points, or 1.01 percent, to close at 17,757. The BSE Sensex tumbled 634 points, or 1.06 percent to end at 59,465.
In the broader market at BSE, the Mid-Cap and the Small-Cap indices out-performed the Sensex as both fell marginally. The Mid-Cap slipped 0.07 percent and the Small-Cap index closed 0.05 percent up.
In the Sensex pack, shares of seven companies climbed while 23 fell. Power Grid was the top gainer as it surged 4.9 percent followed by Bharti Airtel which gained 2.6 percent. Asian Paints rose 0.8 percent.
On the other hand, Bajaj Finserv plunged 4.5 percent. Infosys and TCS, both declined 2.3 percent. Sun Pharma fell 2.2 percent.
In sectoral indices, 13 out of the 19 sectors fell. Power sector index was the top gainers as it rose 1.3 percent followed by Utilities which climbed 1.2 percent.
On the other side, IT sector index plunged 1.7 percent, Teck fell 1.5 percent and Energy declined 1.3 percent.
The overall breadth of the BSE trade was negative as shares of 1678 companies gained while 1727 fell. Shares of 79 companies remained unchanged.
