Single Moms with 50/50 Parenting Time Earn More: Survey

The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affects the 16 million U.S. single mothers according to a new survey of 2,279 single moms and I wanted to offer a timely interview with the study creator and best-selling author Emma Johnson.

Gender pay inequity is being amplified overall as more women than men have lost their jobs since COVID hit, and more are contemplating quitting under the demands of child care. Single moms, who nearly always have the majority of parenting responsibilities after a divorce or breakup, are shown to struggle more than other demographics with these devastating challenges. While mothers overall suffer a 29% pay penalty when compared with fathers, that figure for single mothers is 35%.

The Single Mom Income and Time Sharing Survey to be released January 11th establishes a direct correlation between single mothers’ parenting time and income. With divorce rates spiking heading into what has historically been deemed divorce month, Emma, can offer exclusive insight into the only survey of its kind ever conducted and explain how time-sharing for divorced and separated parents correlates with single mothers’ income and overall well being.

“This survey supports our hypothesis that gender pay equity cannot be achieved without equal parenting time between mothers and fathers,” Emma said. “While it’s not possible to legislate equal time-sharing between married parents, it is possible to legislate equality between separated and divorced parents, which presents a unique opportunity to change gender culture and child-rearing practices for everyone.”

Emma is an award-winning journalist and the creator of Wealthysinglemommy.com, the largest single mom community in the world. In an interview, Emma can offer insights into her research with further analysis of key survey findings, including:

Moms with 50/50 parenting schedules are 54% more likely to earn at least $100,000 annually than moms whose kids are with them most of the time (with “visits” with the dad), and more than three times (325%) more likely to earn $100,000+ than single moms with 100% time responsibility.

Moms with 50/50 parenting schedules are more than twice as likely to earn $65,000+, and nearly three-times as likely to earn that sum than moms with 100% parenting time.

13% of single moms have a 50/50 parenting arrangement, and 51% have their children 100% of the time.

9 in 10 single moms say they could earn more money if they had more equality in their co-parenting schedules.

Moms with 50/50 parenting time are 34% more likely to say they feel “awesome and proud” of being a mom when compared with moms who care for their kids 100% of the time.
