Social Media Blamed for Rumour Mongering as Indian Army Dismisses Claims of Chinese Encroachment in Arunachal Pradesh

New Delhi: The Indian Army has categorically rejected viral social media reports alleging a fresh 60 km encroachment by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) into Arunachal Pradesh, terming them “incorrect and without any basis.” The development has triggered sharp criticism of social media platforms for rampant rumour-mongering that risks inflaming border tensions and spreading panic among citizens.

In a statement issued on June 29, the Army directly addressed the unverified claims: “We have seen some media reports alleging recent encroachment by Chinese PLA and setting up of camps in Arunachal Pradesh. These reports are incorrect and without any basis.”

The allegations originated from a memorandum submitted by the Nah Welfare Society (NWS) from Taksing in Upper Subansiri district, expressing concerns over alleged PLA activities near the border. However, these local inputs were rapidly distorted into sensational narratives on platforms like Instagram, X, and YouTube. Many viral videos featured old, misattributed, or unrelated footage, falsely portraying deep incursions and military camp establishments.

Established Dialogue Mechanisms

India and China continue to manage border differences through institutional mechanisms. The 35th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC), held in Beijing on May 27, 2026, saw constructive discussions on LAC management, peace and tranquillity, trans-border rivers, and future military engagement. Both sides acknowledged progress in maintaining stability, which is seen as key to broader bilateral normalisation.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has also downplayed reports of major intrusions, attributing occasional transgressions to differing perceptions of the undemarcated LAC.

Sharp Criticism of Social Media

Social media has drawn widespread condemnation for its role in amplifying these unverified claims. Rumour-mongering not only creates undue alarm in sensitive border regions but also undermines public confidence in official institutions and complicates diplomatic efforts. Critics argue that algorithms favour sensational content for engagement, often at the expense of national interest and factual accuracy.

Such irresponsible dissemination can have serious repercussions — from affecting morale to influencing perceptions on national security. Fact-checkers and defence analysts have repeatedly flagged the circulation of outdated or fabricated visuals in these campaigns.

The Indian Army’s timely rebuttal highlights the need for greater media literacy and responsible sharing. As India strengthens its border infrastructure under programmes like Vibrant Villages, verified information from authoritative sources remains critical.

PNI News stands committed to fact-based journalism on matters vital to national security. The LAC situation continues to be monitored closely through established channels, with both nations engaged in dialogue for peaceful resolution.
