Surat fire tragedy: Police arrest coaching owner

In Gujarat, the death toll in yesterday’s fire tragedy in Surat has risen to 22 as two more students succumbed to injuries today.

Meanwhile, police have arrested owner of tuition class Bhargav Bhutani in connection with the tragedy.

At least 20 children mostly teenage girls died and 16 others injured in a major fire tragedy in Takshshila complex yesterday- where the tuition class was running.

The fire broke out in the Smart design Studio tuition class where children were taking drawing and art classes.

It was situated on the third to top floor of the 3 storied Takshshila Arcade. Fire Brigade sources said that they received a call at around 4 pm and the fire was controlled in around 2 hours. The injured children have been admitted in Municipal and other nearby hospitals.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani also rushed to the spot last night to overview the rescue and treatment of injured children. He ordered a high-level inquiry in the incident.  

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said that action would be taken against the guilty for violation of norms after the detailed probe.

Local authorities have ordered the closure of all the tuition classes in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot and other cities of the state till fire safety measures are implemented.

The State Government has announced Rs. 4 lakh cash assistance to the families of each victim.

Surat police commissioner Satish Sharma told media persons that FIR has been lodged against builder Harshul Vekaria, Jgnesh Pagdal and owner of Tuition class Bhargav Bhutani.

He said that case has been registered in Sarthana police station under the IPC 304, 308 and 114 including criminal negligence.
