In a moment of historic triumph that has filled Tamil Nadu with hope and celebration, actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar—beloved across the state as Thalapathy Vijay—was sworn in today as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. His fledgling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), launched just two years ago in February 2024, emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections. After six days of intense negotiations and political deliberation following the verdict, Vijay has ascended to lead the state, fulfilling the people’s mandate.

This is a heartwarming story of a people’s leader whose journey from matinee idol to Chief Minister reflects determination, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of ordinary citizens. The people of Tamil Nadu voted for Vijay with immense hope, seeing in him a pro-people leader who promises clean governance, social justice, and real progress. Today, that hope has turned into reality.

A Star is Born: Early Life

Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar was born on June 22, 1974, in Madras (now Chennai) into a family deeply rooted in cinema and strong values. His father, S.A. Chandrasekhar, is a veteran director and producer, and his mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar, a renowned playback singer and Carnatic vocalist. Their harmonious secular household—blending Christian and Hindu traditions—instilled in young Vijay a profound respect for equality, unity, and humanity from a very early age. He lost his younger sister Vidhya at a tender age and founded V.V. Productions in her loving memory, a gesture that reflects his deep sense of family and compassion.

Educated at Fathima Matriculation School and Balalok Matriculation Higher Secondary School, he briefly pursued Visual Communication at Loyola College before dropping out to chase his acting dreams. Beginning as a child artist in his father’s films, he made his lead debut in Naalaiya Theerpu (1992). Vijay’s shy, grounded personality and strong family roots have always defined him as an accessible, principled, and down-to-earth human being—qualities that continue to endear him to millions.

Box Office Colossus

Vijay’s cinematic journey spans over 30 years and stands as a glittering testament to his superstar status and mass appeal. Early breakthroughs with Poove Unakkaga (1996) and the award-winning Kadhalukku Mariyadhai (1997) paved the way for high-octane blockbusters like Ghilli (2004), Pokkiri (2007), and Thuppakki (2012). His later pan-Indian successes delivered massive returns: Leo (2023) grossed around ₹606 crore worldwide, GOAT (2024) crossed ₹457 crore, while Varisu and Bigil each touched the ₹300 crore mark. Consistently delivering ₹200–600 crore entertainers with fervent overseas collections, especially in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and the Middle East, Vijay established himself as one of India’s highest-paid and most loved actors.

Beyond numbers, his “mass hero” persona—blending romance, action, and subtle social messaging—cemented a devoted fan base that saw him not just as an entertainer but as a symbol of justice and hope. These very fans would later become the backbone of his political movement.

The Political Awakening: A Pro-People Journey

Vijay’s shift from reel life to real-world leadership was organic and rooted in genuine public service. Long before entering formal politics, his fan clubs—Vijay Makkal Iyakkam—functioned as formidable welfare networks. They organized blood donation camps, disaster relief during Chennai floods and Cyclone Michaung, education drives, healthcare camps, women’s empowerment programs, skill development initiatives, and rapid response during crises such as COVID-19. Through the Vijay Foundation and related efforts, he quietly supported poverty alleviation, scholarships for underprivileged students, and community upliftment. This sustained, low-profile philanthropy built authentic goodwill among the youth and marginalized sections, converting admiration into deep, unwavering loyalty.

The formal journey began on February 2, 2024, with the launch of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Vijay positioned the party as a clean, transparent alternative focused on development, youth empowerment, Tamil pride, good governance, and secular social justice—deliberately steering clear of alliances that could compromise his independent, people-first vision.

Inspired by Thirukkural: A Philosophy of Equality and Humanity

At the core of Vijay’s political vision lies the ancient Tamil masterpiece Thirukkural by poet-saint Thiruvalluvar. The text’s revolutionary emphasis on equality profoundly shapes TVK’s ideology. The iconic Kural 972 declares: “All beings are equal by birth; distinctions arise only from differences in their deeds.” Vijay has adopted “Pirappokkum Ella Uyirkkum” (All are equal by birth) as a core slogan.

His philosophy of “Vijayism” weaves Thirukkural’s wisdom with progressive ideals from Periyar (social justice and women’s empowerment), Ambedkar (constitutional equality), and Kamaraj (people-centric governance). TVK promotes secularism, rational thinking, state autonomy, anti-corruption, women’s emancipation, environmental protection, youth skilling, and a drug-free society. Rejecting caste and communal divisions, Vijay offers inclusive, compassionate, and pragmatic politics anchored in ethical conduct and emotional connect with the people.

Echoes of MGR: Parallels and a New Hope

Vijay’s meteoric rise naturally draws positive comparisons with legendary matinee idol-turned-chief minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR). Both built larger-than-life personas as champions of the underdog and converted fan loyalty into grassroots welfare. However, Vijay achieved this disruption in just two years as a complete outsider, contesting independently without inherited organizational structures. While respecting the Dravidian legacy, he brings a fresh emphasis on modern governance—transparency, technology, and youth empowerment—alongside social justice.

A Campaign of Hope and Poll Promises

Vijay’s campaign was electric yet deeply personal. Massive rallies drew lakhs of supporters as he addressed unemployment, inflation, women’s safety, farmer distress, and the daily struggles of ordinary citizens with sincerity and passion. TVK’s welfare-oriented manifesto resonated strongly with promises such as ₹2,500 monthly assistance for women, gold and silk sarees for poor brides, farmer loan waivers, robust youth employment and skilling schemes, and tech-driven transparent governance.

Record youth turnout in early 2026 propelled TVK to victory. Vijay won both seats he contested—Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East—by thumping margins. The party surged past 100 seats, dismantling the old political duopoly in one of the most dramatic debuts in Indian electoral history.

Today’s Swearing-In: A New Dawn

Despite six days of political uncertainty, the people’s will has prevailed. On May 10, 2026, Thalapathy Vijay took oath as Chief Minister in a moment filled with celebration and optimism. His pro-people image—as a humble, determined, and compassionate leader—has struck a chord across Tamil Nadu.

A Historic Mandate and the Power of the People

From a child artist in his father’s films to the people’s chosen Chief Minister, Thalapathy Vijay’s journey is a stirring real-life saga of resilience, humility, secular social justice, and transformative change.

In this historic verdict, the people of Tamil Nadu have decisively elected him as a powerful symbol of change against the two Dravidian parties that had long treated the state as their personal fiefdom. This mandate sends a clear and resounding message: in a true democracy, the people are supreme. They cannot and should not be taken for granted. The voters are the real masters — they possess the sovereign power to push aside even the strongest political establishments and bring in their chosen leader when the time is right.

This same power now rests with the people over Vijay as well. Having given him their trust and the revered title of Thalapathy, the people of Tamil Nadu also hold the authority to withdraw it if he fails to remain genuinely pro-people. Vijay’s continued success will depend not on past stardom, but on his ability to deliver on his promises with integrity, transparency, and unwavering commitment to public welfare.
