
Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government in Manipur has plunged into deep crisis with three party MLAs quitting and other six legislators withdrawing support to the state government. According to reports the three BJP legislators have resigned from the Assembly to join Congress.
The BJP that had just 21 elected legislators in the 60 member state Assembly had manipulated to majority with the support of National People’s Party (NPP) and independents. The Congress party with 28 members was crying foul since then.
Of late the Four National People’s Party (NPP) ministers, including Deputy Chief Minister Y JoyKumar Singh, has resigned from the BJP-led government and pledged allegiance to the Congress party. Tribal and Hills Area Development Minister N Kayishii, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Letpao Haokip and Health and Family Welfare Minister L Jayanta Kumar Singh are the other three who quit the government
. Samuel Jendai, TT Haokip and Subashchandra are the three BJP MLAs who resigned from the primary membership of the party . They were formally inducted into congress by Ibobi Singh, former chief minister.
All India Trinamool Congress MLA L Robindro and Independent MLA Ashabuddin have also announced their decisions to withdraw their support to the government.
Meanwhile, Congress state chief Ibobi Singh has asked Governor Najma Akbar Ali Heptulla to convene the Assembly and ask Chief Minister N Biren Singh to prove the majority of his government on the floor of the House.
Congress has now 27 MLAs in 59 member assembly (on Congress membe,r Shyamkumar, who defected to BJP was disqualified ) and with the support of four NPP and one each of AITC and Independent MLAs the party’s strength is now 33. The BJP had 26 MLAs, but after resignation of three MLAs it has only 23 left.
