Crore perform Surya Namaskar on Makar Sankranti ; Several countries including US join

Guwahati:  Today is Magh Bihu or Bhugali Bihu, a major festival celebrated in Assam. Makar Sankranti is celebrated and symbolizes the harvesting of crops and the joy sown therefrom. Magh Bihu is celebrated in the north eastern state of Assam, just as Lohri is celebrated in north India, Pongal in the south when the Sun God is born. Like Pongal, Bihu is also a festival of farmers. Magh Bihu is celebrated on this day by wearing traditional dhoti, gamosa and other colourful clothes.

 On this day, the people of Assam eat khar, aloo pitika, jak, masor tenga etc. However, January 14 is the festival of Makar Sankranti. More than one crore people across the world will perform Surya Namaskar on the morning of Makar Sankranti. The Ministry of AYUSH is going to hold a global Surya Namaskar programme under ‘Amrit Mahotsav of Independence’ on January 14. The Ministry of AYUSH expressed hope that one crore people will perform Surya Namaskar during this period.AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said more than one crore people are expected to participate in the Surya Namaskar programme as compared to the target of 95 lakh. Sonowal said that it is a proven fact that Surya Namaskar creates vitality and immunity, so it is capable of keeping the corona at bay. Union AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that the Surya Namaskar demonstration on Makar Sankranti is more relevant at the time of Covid-19.

Former Assam Chief Minister and Union AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said that as per tradition, surya namaskar will be held all over India and the event is going to be held in many countries of South Asia including USA. Surya Namaskar is built in the Scientific Garden. It affects people a lot. Sonowal said all major yoga institutions in India and abroad such as Indian Yoga Association, National Yoga Sports Association, Yoga Certification Board, Fit India as well as other government and NGOs are expected to participate in the worldwide programme.
