Depression over North TN Coast; moderate to heavy rains expected

Chennai: The Regional Met department has said that the depression over North coastal Tamil Nadu moved after the landfall and lay centered at the Bay of Bengal over North Coastal Tamil Nadu about 40 km east southeast of Chennai. It is very likely to move west northwestwards and weaken gradually into a well marked low-pressure area by this evening. The Met department said that moderate to heavy rains will continue to hit some parts of the Northern districts today. Holiday has been declared for educational institutions in eleven districts today.

AIR correspondent reports, Chennai and suburban areas had intermittent rain in some areas along with power cuts. The city has registered 74 cm rainfall against a normal 42 cm during the northeast monsoon season.  The Met department predicted another low-pressure area is likely to be formed over the South Andaman Sea tomorrow. It is likely to move west northwestwards and become more marked during the subsequent 48 hours. Fourteen people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents. Southern Railway will operate fewer suburban trains in Chennai today. Holiday has been declared for educational institutions in many districts. The NDRF team rescued three Electricity Board workers who were trapped on the waterlogged electrical tower at Thiruporur in Chengalpet district. Excess water in water bodies around Chennai, Chengalpet, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram have been released resulting in inundation. Efforts are taken on war footing to tackle the situation. Giant motors are being used in low-lying areas to clear the stagnant water.
