For new dynamics of crime in 21 st century, police forces need to be smart: Assam CM

GUWAHATI : The Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal attributed people's increased faith in the police administration to the dedicated and committed service of the Assam Police personnel. The Chief Minister said this in a low-key programme held to mark the inauguration of the new building of Dudhnoi Police Station which is constructed under Mission for Overall Improvement of Thana for Responsive Image (MOITRI) Scheme in Goalpara district today. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sonowal said that the 21st century is fraught with many newer challenges and to adequately address them, the police force needs to be smart and agile. He said that the Assam government following the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, undertook an initiative to strengthen the infrastructure of police stations in a bid to develop better work environment. Underlining the need for cordial relationship between police and public, Chief Minister Sonowal said that Assam police has been successful in earning people's confidence and are showing commendable commitment to fight against all sorts crimes and their manifestations. He observed that due to better police-public relationship, number of FIRs are increasing in the State. The police force has also expedited investigation and as a result rate of conviction is also rising, he added. The Chief Minister also urged upon people to cooperate with the police for ushering in better law and order situation in the State. Chief Minister Sonowal also highlighted various steps taken by the State government for safeguarding interests of the indigenous communities in Assam. He informed that the State government is steadfast to protect the rights of the local people over land and also promote their art, culture, language and literature. He said that following the principle of Prime Minister Modi's "sabka saath, sabka vikas, sabka viswas", the Assam government is working with a universal outlook to ensure welfare of all indigenous people. Sonowal also felicitated national award winning weaver Binapani Koch and progressive farmer Chenai C Basumatary in the programme. CEM of Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council Tankeswar Rabha, Dudhnoi MLA Dipak Rabha and ADGP (Law and Order) GP Singh also spoke on the occasion. While Goalpara SP Sushanta Biswa Sarma delivered the welcome speech, the programme was also attended by MLAs Bimal Bora, Sahabuddin Ahmed, Chairman, Assam Minorities Development Board Muminul Aowal, Managing Director of Assam Police Housing Board Arabinda Kalita, DIG Western Range Rounaq Ali Hazarika, DC Varnali Deka among others.
