Governor visits Kokrajhar, participated in plantation drive

Kokrajhar: Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi on Monday visited Kokrajhar and participated in a plantation drive at Jharbari Khalasi and Sanfang range in Kokrajhar district where over 10,000 saplings were planted.

Speaking to Reporters after the plantation programme, the governor said a massive plantation drive has been taken up to plant 40 lakhs saplings across the four Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri in a time bound manner. He said so far around 31 lakhs saplings have been planted and the remaining will be planted by 31 August. He said special initiative and care has been taken so that the plants survive and special effort has been taken for this with the help of local people. He is optimistic that with the effort all the deforestation areas will be covered- up in 3-4 years time.

Expressing his serious concern over the indiscriminate deforestation and rampant cutting of valuable trees in BTAD which is famous for its beauty and greenery is fast turning the area into barren land, the Governor called upon all to join hand in the protection of forest and wildlife in the Bodoland region.

On the termination of 29 nos of illegal appointments in Transport department BTC which includes 8 nos of Assistant Enforcement Inspectors and 21 nos of Enforcement Checkers, the Governor said the administrative steps have been taken up inquiry and it was found that these 29 posts “never the posts were created, never the post was advertised, no applications were invited for the post, never these applications were scrutinised and no test were held. It was totally illegal, he said adding that necessary action will be taken against all these found involved in the job scams.
