Life convict in Mangaldai jail clears degree exam with distinction

MANGALDAI :: The correctional and reforming initiatives taken up by the Mangaldai district jail authorities for its inmates over the last few years have started showing results as Arupjyoti Deka , a life convict has cleared the degree final examination under Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University (KKHSOU)with distinction marks . Besides Arupjyoti , two other life convicts of the jail Dhrubajyoti Hazarika and Ilias Purti have also obtained graduation from the university .

Two other inmates of the jail who had also appeared in the examination from the study centre of KKHSOU set up in the jail in 2016 have narrowly missed out not clearing one subject each of the previous year. Prior to this Arupjyoti had topped the university in the Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP) . Coming to know the rare achievements of the inmates , an elated jail authorities on may 1 organized a function to greet the successful inmates and also to offer respect to the faculties of the study centre . Several speakers including Dr Leena Saikia of Mangaldai college, Bhupen Haloi , the coordinator of the university study centre in the jail and a faculty of Mangaldai college , Manoj Kr Sarma , the founder coordinator , Rittik Choudhury , director of another local study centre of the university , Dr Dibya Rajmedhi , Medical Officer of the jail and several teachers recounted their association with the study centre and its students . While expressing their feelings , Arupjyoti and his two fellow inmates offered their thanks and gratitude to the jail authorities for giving them the opportunity to study and teachers for their untiring support and guidance.

They also expressed their desire to pursue master degrees and sought support from all. Later they all received their exam cleared certificates ceremonially from the guests present on the occasion. Earlier Ranjit Buragohain , Superintendent of the jail gave a brief account on the background of the correctional initiative taken up by the then Superintendent Jon Dev Choudhury and others in the year 2016. The function also witnessed handing over a big bundle of books to the jail authorities for its library by Manikankana Changmai, on behalf of a Guwahati based social reforms organization ‘Uttaran-Ek Jatra’. The event was also attended by jailor Jyoti Prakash , assistant jailor Manash Pratim Buragohain , pharmacist Biswajit Bora and all its inmates and parents of the three successful inmates while inmate Deepjyoti Nath and Superintendent Buragohain each presented a song to add more flavor to it
