GUWAHATI : The name of the top-10 high-performing police stations in the country has been announced. The Government of India has selected the best performing police stations across the country every year “to encourage more effective functioning of police stations and bring healthy competition among them”. A matter of great pride for the north-eastern states, the Nongpoksemai police station in Manipur’s Thubal district has been designated the “best performing” police station across the country. 3 police stations in the North East have relocated to the top 10 best performing police stations across the country for the year 2020.
The Nongpoksemai police station in Theobal district of Manipur, announced by the Centre, topped the top 10 list. The other two police stations in the north-east are: Kharsang police station in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh and Pyongg police station in the eastern district of Sikkim. While, Kharsang police station managed to reach third place, The Pyongg police station emerged as the 7th best across the country. A senior North East senior official of the Union Home Ministry said that Nongposekmi has been selected as the best performing police station in Theobal district of Manipur. Thereafter, the AWPC-Suramangalam police station in Salem City of Tamil Nadu and Changlang Kharsang police station in Arunachal Pradesh have been selected. Out of 16671 police stations in the country, 10 apex police stations have been selected for the year 2020.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs said, “The Central Government selects better performing police stations in the country every year to develop a healthy competition between them by encouraging them to make their functioning effective. The top police stations include Surajpur Venetian (Bhaiya Thana) in Chhattisgarh, Sanguim in Goa, Kalighat in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, East Pakyong in Sikkim, Kanth in Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, Khanvel in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Jammikunta Town police station in Karimnagar district of Telangana. The conference is being held in a digital manner for the first time amidst the Corona virus epidemic. According to the statement, the Home Ministry had conducted a survey for the best performing police stations amidst challenging situations this year. In view of various traffic restrictions due to corona epidemic, it has been a very difficult task to reach police stations located in remote areas.
The survey was conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Government. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “Out of thousands of police stations in the country, the police stations which have been selected are in small towns and rural areas. The police stations which have been placed in the category of top 10 police stations are also true. This shows that availability of resources is an important factor, but most importantly, the commitment and honesty of our police personnel is why they serve the country by preventing crime. ‘ Out of 16,671 police stations in the country, 10 top police stations were selected based on data analysis, direct observation and public response. A final list of names of police stations was introduced on the basis of performance in cases like property offences for ranking, crime against women, crime against weaker sections of the society. The Home Ministry said that the ranking process was initiated after making a list of the best police stations in each state. The North East senior official of the Home Ministry said that the categories of civilians included were from citizens leaving nearby residential areas, nearby markets and police stations. The citizens who were contacted for feedback included 4,056 respondents, each in the short-listed location with about 60 people. All the States of the Union participated in this year’s survey with full cooperation to complete the survey during the epidemic period.
