Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar known as the “Father Emir,” who transformed the small Gulf state into a global powerhouse through visionary leadership in energy, media, diplomacy, and development, passed away on July 12, 2026, at the age of 74.

Born in Doha in 1952, Sheikh Hamad received his early education in Qatar before attending the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, graduating in 1971. He rose through the ranks of the Qatar Armed Forces, serving as chief of staff and minister of defense. In 1995, he led a bloodless palace coup against his father, Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, assuming power as Emir.

During his 18-year reign (1995–2013), Sheikh Hamad oversaw Qatar’s extraordinary modernization. He harnessed the country’s vast natural gas reserves, particularly through liquefied natural gas (LNG) development, elevating Qatar to the world’s richest nation per capita. Qatar’s GDP and per capita income surged dramatically, and the Qatar Investment Authority became a major global investor in landmark assets including The Shard, Harrods, Barclays, and Paris Saint-Germain F.C.

Key initiatives under his leadership included founding Al Jazeera in 1996, which reshaped Arab and international media; establishing the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development; hosting major events such as the 2006 Asian Games and securing the 2022 FIFA World Cup; and adopting Qatar National Vision 2030 to build a knowledge-based economy. He also introduced Qatar’s first permanent constitution and municipal elections, while pursuing an independent foreign policy that positioned the country as a mediator in regional conflicts.

In a historic break from tradition, Sheikh Hamad voluntarily abdicated in June 2013 in favor of his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, becoming known thereafter as the Father Emir. He continued to be regarded as the architect of modern Qatar.

Qatar declared a four-day period of national mourning, with government offices suspended and flags at half-mast. Tributes from leaders worldwide have highlighted his legacy of bold transformation and global engagement.

Sheikh Hamad is survived by his family, including his wife Sheikha Moza bint Nasser and their children. His vision leaves an enduring imprint on Qatar and the broader region. May he rest in peace.
